The Canon 400mm f/5.6L

Canon’s most affordable “L” quality supertelephoto, the 400mm f/5.6 is lightweight (considering its reach and quality) and known for providing extremely sharp images, even with the aperture wide open. While its weight allows it to be easily handheld, it does not have image stabilization, so using a tripod is recommended except in good light conditions.

Roger's Take

This is an old design. Doesn’t have any image stabilization. Doesn’t have 14 aspherical ultra-low-dispersion aspherical fuorite elements. Why don’t they update it, you ask? Because they don’t need to, that’s why. It’s lightweight, it’s sharp as could be, it autofocuses quickly, it’s reasonably priced. If you’ve got good sunlight, this is a great choice.

Be honest — you were going to rent the bigger, heavier 100-400mm and then take every single shot at 400 anyway, weren’t you?
