The Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto brings a favorite zoom range to the celebrated Canon L-series. It features two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) elements for improved image quality and reduced chromatic aberration. It also incorporates a floating focusing mechanism for sharpness from close up to infinity. The IS system increases usability by approximately four stops, while the inner and rear focusing system allows for fast, quiet autofocus as close as 3.9’ (1.2m).

Roger's Take

I’ve had time to play with a couple of copies of this now, shoot it a bit more, and form a firmer opinion. It is a bit sharper throughout the range than I first realized and is a clear improvement over the consumer zoom at the long end, but then at three times the price, it should be sharper. I stick with my opinion that it’s not Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II sharp but certainly Canon 100-400mm sharp. There is no major distortion evident at either end.

It is not as large as I expected -- clearly lighter and smaller than a 70-200 f/2.8. The front element extends on an inner barrel about 3" when zooming, but the front element doesn’t rotate, so filters will work fine. The IS is excellent. One spectacularly good thing I found only after working with it for some time: it may be the most flare resistant lens in the bag, so it's an excellent choice if you’ll be working with bright sunlight in the field of view.

Still, I’m sticking with my original opinion. It’s a very nice lens. It’s a much better lens than the $500 consumer grade Canon 70-300 IS (which is a very good consumer zoom). However, if I were putting down my hard-earned cash (OK, maybe not so hard-earned, I make my living playing with photography toys all day), I’d buy the consumer zoom and spend the other $1,000 on a Canon 17-55mm IS or Canon 24-105mm – or just get a Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS and blow $500 on groceries or something frivolous.

If you don't see exactly what you're looking for and that makes you sad, please give us a shout. We might have good news for you. Here's a link to our contact form.

We offer a 3-day inspection period on all sales, during which time you may return the item for a refund of the purchase price, not including shipping.

On this item, we include a LensAuthority 90-day limited warranty. This warranty covers damage that arises from normal use of the item. It does NOT cover accidental or intentional damage. More details are available in our FAQ section.

In addition to the standard 90-day warranty, you may have the option to purchase an extended warranty. If we're able to offer an extended warranty on this item, you'll see a checkbox to add that warranty - see the area just above the "Add to Cart" button.

If you select the extended warranty, you'll get additional protection from Consumer Priority Service ("CPS"). The CPS warranty will take effect after our 90-day warranty ends. However, the CPS warranty term would begin on the date of purchase. For example, if you buy an item with a 2-year extended warranty today, your coverage would end two years from today.
