The Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro

A unique specialty lens only for Macro shooting, the MP-E can magnify an object up to 5x, which would fill a 35mm frame with a grain of rice. This is a specialty lens that is best used by experienced Macro shooters. A focusing rail and Macro flash are good ideas when using this lens. If you do not have a Macro flash we strongly recommend the MT-24EX flash.

Now, a little bit of math to keep things in perspective. The resolving power of the MP-E is limited by the size of the pixels on your sensor at most aperture and focus distance combinations. Since typical pixels are 5-10 µm square and the MP-E can give up to 5x magnification, this means it is capable of picking out features only a few micrometers across. For comparison, “human hair” varies in thickness from 17-180 µm- crazy.

Roger's Take

This is arguably the most powerful tool in macro photography. It’s used from everything to classic macro work to photographing industrial microscopic images like circuit boards. But beware: this is not a lens you rent for the weekend to take your first macro shots with. You will need a focusing rail, a tripod, some macro lights or a very good light source, and a lot of patience to get those kinds of images. With the proper tools, this lens is beyond spectacular. Without them, it’s a medium sized paperweight.
