The Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR

The 28-300 AF-S VR II lens brings the superzoom to FX sensor cameras (and can be used on DX sensors too). The obvious appeal is the 10.5x zoom range and a rather spectacular ability to focus as closely as 18" at every focal length. The VR II image stabilization allows you to handhold your camera at up to four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and stable video capture.

The lens has nine aperture blades that produce smooth out-of-focus highlights, two extra-low dispersion elements, and three aspherical elements. It is internal focusing, so filters are easy to use, and the Silent Wave Motor provides fast autofocus.

Roger's Take

Let’s be clear: this lens is all about expectations. If a reviewer wants to rip it up, they can. It’s got barrel distortion at the wide end and pincushion in the middle. It’s soft in the corners and has some lateral chromatic aberration. Autofocus speed isn’t slow, but you’re not going to catch action sports with it, either. And wide open at the wide end its got a fair bit of vignetting. For any particular purpose you can find a better lens.

But that’s not what this is about. This lens does something that is really remarkable: it gives FX shooters a single-lens solution that gives good, sharp images from 28-300mm. If that was an easy thing, it would have been done before now. If it was an easy thing, Canon’s 28-300mm wouldn’t be twice as long, twice as heavy, and two-and-a-half times more expensive. This, my friends, is a remarkable lens. As a vacation lens, a walkaround lens, and an outdoor do-everything lens, it's just amazing. Lets put it in perspective: from 28-120mm it's just about as good (although not as wide an aperture) as the 24-120mm, plus you get the extra range at a lower price. An amazing thing Nikon has accomplished here.

Will fine-art, landscape, and wedding photographers be waiting in line to get a copy? Probably not. Will about a million other people be taking it on vacation? Absolutely!

We offer a 3-day inspection period on all sales, during which time you may return the item for a refund of the purchase price, not including shipping.

On this item, we include a LensAuthority 90-day limited warranty. This warranty covers damage that arises from normal use of the item. It does NOT cover accidental or intentional damage. More details are available in our FAQ section.

In addition to the standard 90-day warranty, you may have the option to purchase an extended warranty. If we're able to offer an extended warranty on this item, you'll see a checkbox to add that warranty - see the area just above the "Add to Cart" button.

If you select the extended warranty, you'll get additional protection from Consumer Priority Service ("CPS"). The CPS warranty will take effect after our 90-day warranty ends.
