The Zeiss ZE 15mm f/2.8 Distagon for Canon

The Zeiss ZE 15mm f/2.8 Distagon T* is a high-quality, ultra-wide-angle lens for use with Canon EF-mount cameras. It provides a 110 degree angle of view that has a very minimal amount of distortion. Combine that with its large depth of field and you have an optically stellar lens that’s perfectly suited for architectural and landscape photography.

The optical formula features two aspherical lenses, partial dispersion glass, and a floating element design that provide high quality images throughout the focus range. It has a close focus distance of 9.84" that makes it great at accentuating perspective for the adventurous, while its fast f/2.8 aperture makes shooting in poor lighting conditions quite possible. Like all other ZE lenses, the 15mm f/2.8 works in all exposure modes and transmits focus confirmation and EXIF data on compatible cameras. The built-in metal hood not only minimizes lens flares, but also helps to protect the bulbous front element. The lens does have a front threaded filter ring that accepts a 95mm filter.

Roger's Take

I kind of feel sorry for Zeiss. For about 10 years everyone has begged them to make a world-class, ultra-wide-angle lens. So they went and made the 15mm f/2.8, which is superb. In the corners it’s sharper than the Canon 14mm, and it's equal in the center. Barrel distortion, for such a wide lens, isn’t bad at 2%, and it’s fairly flare resistant. So what does everyone do? They complain about the hood and the fact that you can’t easily mount filters on it. Tried mounting a filter on a 17mm TS-E lately?

But it’s an excellent lens, far better than the old 18mm ZE lens. It’s a bit better than the Canon 14mm f/2.8, particularly in the corners. It’s also a bit bigger, heavier, and more expensive, for those who are concerned about size and cost. But right now, if you want the best ultra-wide image you can get, this is the choice.
